Pre-opening Comments for Wednesday April 17th
U.S. equity index futures (except the Dow Jones Industrial Average with its heavy weight in UnitedHealth Group) were higher this morning. S&P 500 futures were up 41 points at 8:35 AM EDT
S&P 500 Index futures added 15 points following release of economic news at 8:30 AM EDT. Consensus for U.S. March Housing Starts was a drop to 1.420 million units from 1.501 million units in February. Actual was a drop to 1.324 million units. Consensus for the April Philly Fed Manufacturing Index was a drop to 3.1 from 12.5 in March. Actual was a drop to -26.4.
UnitedHealth Group plunged $116.04 to $468.82 after reporting less than consensus first quarter results.
Alcoa dropped $0.25 to $24.70 after the company indicated no immediate plans to restart its idled U.S. production capacity, despite the Trump administration’s new tariffs on imports.
Taiwan Semiconductor advanced $4.72 to $156.39 after reporting higher than consensus first quarter results.
