U.S. equity index futures were higher this morning.<\/b> S&P 500 futures were up 23 points in pre-opening trade.<\/em><\/p>\n

Bed Bath & Beyond dropped $1.21 to $7.42<\/b> on news that the company\u2019s Chief Financial Officer died by suicide.<\/em><\/p>\n

Discover Financial slipped $0.28 to $99.25 <\/b>after JP Morgan downgraded the stock from Overweight to Neutral.<\/em><\/p>\n

FedEx dropped $3.32 to $205.40<\/b> after Citigroup downgraded the stock from Buy to Neutral. Target price was dropped to $225 from $270.<\/em><\/p>\n

The Bottom Line<\/strong><\/font><\/p>\n

Last week North American equity indices continued to respond to Federal Reserve Chairman Powell\u2019s Jackson Hole Conference speech on August 26th<\/sup><\/b>. Monetary policy in the U.S. will continue to tighten until the U.S. inflation rate trends toward a 2% rate. The Federal Reserve\u2019s focus on the core PCE Price Index as its primary measure started to show promise when the Index slipped in July from 4.7% to 4.6% when reported on August 26th<\/sup>. However, several members of the FOMC stated publicly last week that more evidence of a downtrend is needed before a change in its tightening policy can occur. Focus has started to turn toward results of the next FOMC meeting on September 21st<\/sup> when the Fed Fund Rate is expected to increase by at least another 0.50% and possibly by another 0.75%. Current range for the Fed Fund Rate is 2.25%-2.50%.<\/p>\n

U.S. equity indices are following their historic performance for years ending in \u201c2\u201d<\/b> implying weakness from late August to early October followed by strength to at least the end of the year. Note that years ending in \u201c2\u201d also were mid-term U.S Presidential election years.<\/p>\n

Consensus for Earnings and Revenues for S&P 500 Companies<\/strong><\/font><\/p>\n

Analysts have lowered earnings and revenue estimates significantly since our last report on August 8th<\/sup>.<\/b> According to www.factset.com<\/a> third quarter earnings are expected to increase 3.8% (versus previous estimate at 5.8%) and revenues are expected to increase 8.8% (versus previous estimate at 9.1%). Fourth quarter earnings are expected to increase 4.9% (versus previous estimate at 6.5%) and revenues are expected to increase 6.5% (versus previous estimate at 6.7%). Earnings for all of 2022 are expected to increase 7.9% (versus previous estimate at 8.9%) and revenues are expected to increase 10.8% (versus previous estimate at 11.0%. <\/p>\n

Economic News This Week<\/strong><\/font><\/p>\n

August ISM Non-Manufacturing ISM <\/b>released at 10:00 AM EDT on Tuesday is expected to dip to 55.5 from 56.7 in July.<\/p>\n

July U.S. Trade Deficit<\/b> released at 8:30 AM EDT on Wednesday is expected to drop to $70.5 billion from $79.60 billion in June. <\/p>\n

Canada\u2019s July Merchandise Trade<\/b> released at 8:30 AM EDT on Wednesday is expected to slip to a surplus of $3.50 billion from $5.05 billion in June. <\/p>\n

Bank of Canada releases a statement on the Canadian economy<\/b> at 10:00 AM EDT on Wednesday. The Overnight Lending Rate to Canada\u2019s major banks is expected to increase from 2.50% to 3.25%.<\/p>\n

Beige Book<\/b> is released at 2:00 PM EDT on Wednesday<\/p>\n

European Central Bank\u2019s<\/b> lending rate to major banks<\/b> released at 8:30 AM EDT on Thursday is expected to increase to 1.00% from 0.50%.<\/p>\n

Canada\u2019s August Employment <\/b>released at 8:30 AM EDT on Friday is expected to increase 15,000 versus a decline of 30,600 in July. August Unemployment Rate is expected to increase to 5.0% from 4.9% in July.<\/p>\n
