Pre-opening Comments for Tuesday February 21st<\/sup><\/strong><\/font><\/em><\/p>\n

U.S. equity index futures were lower this morning. <\/b>S&P 500 futures were down 35 points in pre-opening trade. <\/em><\/p>\n

The Canadian Dollar was virtually unchanged at US. 74.19 cents following release of Canadian economic news at 8:30 AM EST.<\/em><\/b><\/p>\n

January Canadian Consumer Price Index<\/b> on a year-over-year basis was expected to increase 6.1% versus 6.3% in December. Actual was an increase of 5.9%.<\/em><\/p>\n

December Canadian Retail Sales<\/b> were expected to increase 0.5% versus a drop of 0.1% in November. Actual was an increase of 0.5%. Excluding auto sales, December Canadian Retail Sales were expected to increase 0.4% versus a drop of 0.6% in November. Actual was an increase of 0.6%.<\/em><\/p>\n

WTI Crude oil gained $0.57 to US$76.91 per barrel<\/b> prior to a major winter storm entering the U.S. mid-west.<\/em><\/p>\n

Wal-Mart dropped $5.54 to $140.90<\/b> after the company offered less than consensus fiscal first quarter guidance. <\/em><\/p>\n

Home Depot dropped $13.25 to $304.70<\/b> after reporting less than consensus fiscal fourth quarter revenues. It also offered lower than consensus fiscal first quarter guidance. <\/em><\/p>\n

The Bottom Line<\/strong><\/font><\/p>\n

Focus this week is on the January core PCE Price Index released on Friday<\/b>. January CPI and PPI reports released last week were \u201chotter\u201d than hoped by the Federal Reserve. Selected member of the FOMC hinted that the Fed Fund Rate could increase another 50 basis points at its next meeting on March 21\/March 22. North American equity markets will remain \u201cchoppy\u201d between now and the next meeting.<\/p>\n

Consensus for Earnings and Revenues for S&P 500 Companies<\/strong><\/font><\/p>\n

<\/b><\/p>\n

Analysts increased fourth quarter earnings and revenue estimates slightly from our last report on February 13th<\/sup>. <\/b>Eighty two percent of S&P 500 companies have reported quarterly results to date. According to www.factset.com<\/a> fourth quarter earnings are expected to decrease 4.7% (versus previous decrease of 4.9%) but revenues are expected to increase 5.1% (versus previous increase of 4.6%). <\/p>\n

Preliminary estimates for 2023 continue to move lower. <\/b>According to www.factset.com<\/a> first quarter 2023 earnings are expected to decrease 5.4% (versus previous decrease of 5.1%) but revenues are expected to increase 1.9%. Second quarter 2023 earnings are expected to decrease 3.4% (versus previous decrease at 3.3%) and revenues are expected to decrease 0.1%. Third quarter earnings are expected to increase 3.3% (versus a previous increase of 3.4%) and revenues are expected to increase 1.4% (versus previous increase of 1.3%). Fourth quarter earnings are expected to increase 9.7% (versus previous increase of 10.1%) and revenues are expected to increase 3.4% (versus previous increase of 3.7%). For all of 2023, earnings are expected to increase 2.3% (versus previous increase of 2.5%) and revenues are expected to increase 2.3% (versus previous increase of 2.4%)<\/p>\n

January Canadian Consumer Price Index<\/b> released at 8:30 AM EST on Tuesday is expected to drop 0.7% versus a drop of 0.6% in December. On a year-over-year basis January CPI is expected to increase 6.1% versus 6.3% in December. <\/p>\n

December Canadian Retail Sales<\/b> released at 8:30 AM EST on Tuesday is expected to drop 0.5% versus a drop of 0.1% in November. Excluding auto sales<\/b>, December Canadian Retail Sales are expected to drop 0.4% versus a drop of 0.6% in November. <\/p>\n

January U.S. Existing Home Sales<\/b> released at 10:00 AM EST on Tuesday are expected to increase to 4.10 million units from 4.02 million units in December.<\/p>\n

FOMC Meeting Minutes<\/b> are released at 2:00 PM EST on Wednesday<\/p>\n

Next estimate of fourth quarter U.S. GDP<\/b> released at 8:30 AM EST on Thursday is expected to remain unchanged at an annual rate of 2.9%.<\/p>\n

January Personal Savings<\/b> released at 8:30 AM EST on Friday is expected to increase 0.9% versus a gain of 0.2% in December. January Personal Spending<\/b> is expected to increase 1.3% versus a drop of 0.2% in December.<\/p>\n

January Core PCE Price Index<\/b> released at 8:30 AM EST on Friday is expected to increase 0.4% versus a gain of 0.3% in December. On a year-over-year basis<\/b>, January Core PCE Price Index is expected to increase 4.3% versus a gain of 4.4% in December.<\/p>\n

February Michigan Consumer Sentiment<\/b> released at 10:00 AM EST on Friday is expected to remain unchanged from January at66.4 <\/p>\n

January New Home Sales<\/b> released at 10:00 AM EST on Friday is expected to increase to 620,000 units 616,000 units in December. <\/p>\n
