Responses to FOMC Announcement Yesterday
The Federal Reserve decided to maintain its Fed Fund Rate at a 3.50%-3.75% rate in an 8 to 4 vote decision. The decision was announced at 2:00 PM EST. Responses to the news after 2:00 PM EST were as follows:
S&P 500 Index recorded a modest gain
The U.S. Dollar Index moved slightly higher
Long term U.S. Treasury Bond prices moved slightly lower
The Canadian Dollar was virtually unchanged.
Technical Notes
Crude Oil ETN (USO) moved above $143.98 to a 10 year high extending an intermediate uptrend.
Corn ETN (CORN) moved above $18.84 extending an intermediate uptrend.
S&P 100 and NASDAQ 100 stocks moving above resistance extending an intermediate uptrend included MasterCard (MA) on a move above $527.47, NXP Semiconductor (NXPI) on a move above $255.04 and $286.51 to an all-time high, Visa (V) on a move above $319.44, $335.77, and $366.90, Diamondback Energy (FANG) on a move above $204.91 to an all-time high, CVS Health on a move above $83.72 and Starbucks (SBUX) on a move above $104.15
Healthcare SPDRs (XLV) dropped below 143.07 extending an intermediate downtrend. S&P 100 and NASDAQ 100 Healthcare stocks moving below support extending an intermediate downtrend included Amgen (AMGN) on a move below $335.06, Regeneron (REGN) on a move below $727.88, $717.52 and $691.03, Vertex Pharmaceutical (VRTX) on a move below $425.26, AstraZeneca (AZN) on a move below $182.39
CGI Group (GIB/A.TO) and GIB) a TSX 60 stock moved below Cdn$95.84 and US$69.40 extending an intermediate downtrend. The company reported lower than consensus fiscal second quarter results.
Brookfield Infrastructure Partners (BIP) a TSX 60 stock moved below US$34.74 setting an intermediate downtrend.
